When given complete creative freedom to decorate a room for the Designer Showcase Home for the Preservation North Carolina, Melanie Mann and Jamie Mayo of Baby Swank in Wilmington set their sights on the seas. "We wanted to design the room around a nautical theme with bold blues and sharp reds," Melanie explains.
By contrasting bold trims against a simple white color, they accented the silhouettes in the smaller space. A dramatic navy blue was used in the adjacent bathroom to balance the ebb-and-flow of the two rooms. The classic combination of navy blue walls and red trim accompanied by unique canvas art gives the room a slightly modern twist. "We love using eclectic items like oars and a bear skin rug to add character to the room," Melanie says. "Adding personal details like children's artwork reveals how functional the space can be even though it's a smaller area." The Sailboat Growth Chart painted on the wall gives the room a finishing touch. "We wanted to accent the historic room without changing the timeless architecture," Melanie adds with a smile, "and I think we did just that."
