Triangle Hospital & Birthing Center Profiles

Durham Regional Hospital

The Rooms

All labor and delivery rooms at Durham Regional are private with a television, phone and an attached baby room. All emergency equipment is hidden behind furniture and wood paneling and four of the eight rooms boast Jacuzzis. All postpartum rooms are private as well.

Infant Care

Infants not requiring special care can room-in with mom or be cared for in the nursery. No supplemental formula, glucose water or pacifiers are routinely given unless the mother requests. Infants born prematurely are cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit - a Level II Special Care Nursery with 18 beds supported by specially trained nurses and Duke Neonatology. The nursery is designed to provide the highest quality of care in a supportive environment. Infants born earlier than 32 weeks gestation are stabilized and transported to a level three intensive care nursery, usually at Duke Children's Hospital.

For Your Family

While in labor and delivery, we welcome three guests (this includes the support person). There is a convenient waiting area for all other visitors on the 4th floor. Classes are available to help expectant families prepare (New Parenting Class, Infant/Child CPR, Childbirth Preparation for New Parents, Breastfeeding). Other classes with a focus on care for both mom and baby postpartum are available. There is a nominal fee for Infant/Child CPR, Childbirth Preparation and Breastfeeding classes. All other classes are free.

Of Note

Durham Regional has made nurse recruitment and retention a strategic priority and nowhere is this more apparent than in the labor and delivery unit. Many of the labor and delivery nurses have been at the hospital for 10 plus years. Durham Regional is proud of its ability to recruit the brightest talent from top nursing programs.

Flexibility for You

Durham Regional prides itself on giving you the birth experience you desire. Women planning to give birth at Durham Regional can expect the staff to work with their choices - including any privately hired doulas or hypnotists. Our nursing staff will get you and baby off to a good start with breast feeding and, if needed, certified lactation consultants are available.

A Real Mom's Experience

Beverly Heatherly was apprehensive about her scheduled cesarean section for the birth of her second child, and to make matters worse she had a bad cold. "I have been so happy with my care here," says Heatherly. "Every person has been wonderful. The anesthesiologists really put me at ease, and the nurses are amazing. They are always checking on me, even when I don't call for a nurse. They have really been attentive to controlling my pain and making sure all my needs are met. I've been very happy with my delivery and my experience here," she says.
