The Safest Car Seat

Choosing a car seat can be overwhelming. Many new parents feel unprepared to make a decision. We talked to veteran moms and developed this checklist of points to consider.

There are a variety of seats from different manufacturers that will work for your child. But the best choice is one that's suited to your child's age, weight and height. The safest car seat is one that is installed and always used properly. No matter what car seat you choose, read the manufacturers instructions carefully and make a trip to your local fire or police department for free confirmation that it's installed properly.

When you choose a car seat, look for one that is easy to install and has a locking mechanism that your child can't unfasten. Choose a seat with a five point harness that your child cannot unlock. The straps should not get twisted or jammed easily. Also, check the padding on the seat. Your child is much more likely to fall asleep in a seat that is comfortable.

LATCH was developed in response to the astonishing number of car seats that are incorrectly installed every day. The system is designed to be easier to use than traditional belt installation. The hope is that it will improve the number of correct installations and therefore improve safety. However, LATCH is not safer than a correctly installed belt system. If your car seat has two installation options, it's generally better to choose the LATCH option.

Though car seats come in a range of styles and fabrics that would make our mothers jealous, most manufacturers still do not offer the range of fabrics and styles that moms are looking for. Opt for a trendy cover from Snazzy Baby (www.snazzybaby.com). You'll be able to change the look from boy to girl for subsequent children and a little spit up won't make you nearly as nervous.

Register your car seat. Filling out the manufacturers warranty card is the only way you'll receive alerts from the manufacturer if the car seat has any problems later on. Make sure you take this important step after you purchase!
