The Fashionable Diaper Bag

Four Tips for Selecting the Right One

A diaper bag should match you, not the baby.

Look around the mall or your playgroup. Today's diaper bags reflect the style of the person carrying them - the mom, not the baby. Diaper bags with moons, stars, teddy bears and dolls are out. Funky fabrics, luxurious silks and gorgeous patterns are in. When you're choosing your bag, think about coordinating with your clothes, not the baby's. After all, you're the one carrying the bag.

Ramp up the budget.

Without a doubt, you'll carry this bag more than any purse or bag you've ever had before. It will go with you to the mall, to playgroup, to your mother's house, to the sitter - everywhere that baby goes. Make sure to buy a bag that you'll be happy with - even if it's a big investment. If you're worried about durability, select one of the great wipeable versions that are coated with vinyl. You'll carry this bag more than your best purse - go ahead and buy what you want.

Think about the accessories.

Are you the type who always loses anything that isn't attached? If so, you might want to opt for a Petunia Picklebottom and its integrated zip-out changing pad. Do you need a cell phone holder? A separate diaper area? Do you like large enclosures or specific enclosures for each item type? As you examine the bags, make sure to be realistic about what you'll really be carrying day to day and buy a bag that accommodates those items.

Think about durability and washability.

Keep food and juice boxes in your diaper bag? Set it on the sticky floor of the movie theater? If so, you're not unlike most moms. Consider a machine washable diaper bag, or even one with a surface that wipes clean. If you care that it always looks brand new, the bag's cleanability is a must.
